Hillrock Estate Distillery holds a genuine industry-first distinction: the first company to offer solera-aged bourbon in America, a technique traditionally reserved for crafting exceptional Sherries, Ports, Madeiras, and Cognacs, brought into whiskey production by the late Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, formerly of Maker's Mark. The solera system itself is worth understanding — a pyramid of barrels where a portion of whiskey is periodically transferred from the lower casks, while new whiskey is added to the top, ensuring no barrel is ever fully emptied and older and younger whiskeys gradually blend together over time, building genuine depth and complexity.

This particular expression takes that solera-aged bourbon foundation and gives it a final finishing stage in Tawny Port casks — wine barrels that spend years oxidizing in wood, developing a genuinely nutty, dried-fruit character distinct from the brighter, fruitier profile of ruby port. Hillrock has used this exact cask type before as part of its celebrated Cathy's Cuvée series, curated by co-founder Cathy Franklin, where the Tawny Port component was described as contributing "red berry and chocolate" alongside the blend's Sauternes and Pedro Ximénez finishes. This standalone Port Cask Finish gives that same Tawny Port character room to define the whiskey entirely on its own, rather than sharing the stage with other cask influences.
